The Octa is Journe’s automatic architecture, one base calibre carrying every complication from reserve to perpetual calendar without growing a millimetre. All of it, movement included, in 18k rose gold.

F.P. Journe's Octa Quantième Perpétuel, here in 42mm 18k rose gold, carrying a silver guilloché display. Automatic 1300.3 inside.

Fun fact: F.P. Journe builds his movements in solid 18k rose gold rather than brass, a decision no other house takes, and every dial reads Invenit et Fecit, invented and made. Production is under a thousand watches a year.

The reference in depth

A perpetual calendar you can set at any hour

Why this one matters

The Octa is Journe's automatic platform, launched in 2001. The base calibre 1300 was built around one architecture, one large barrel and a long reserve, with complications added on top of it. Over the years the same base carried a power reserve model, a big date, a moon phase, a second time zone and a chronograph.

The Quantieme Perpetuel was announced in 2013, with deliveries from 2015, and it took over from the Octa Calendrier annual calendar in that year. Journe now lists it in the Classique line rather than under the Octa name, which matters when a buyer searches for it. It shows hours, minutes, day, month, a large twin aperture date, leap year and power reserve on a solid silver dial with applied gold numerals.

The movement

Calibre 1300.3 is self winding, with gold plates and bridges and an off centre 22k gold rotor, which is part of why the case stays reasonably slim for what it holds. Journe gives 160 hours plus or minus 10 for this calibre, roughly six and a half days, from a single large barrel. The five day figure belongs to the earlier 1300 base rather than to this version. The calendar jumps instantaneously and in unison, so there is no danger window around midnight.

On the wrist

42mm in red gold has real presence, though the case is not thick and the lugs turn down, so it settles rather than perches. Gold at this diameter carries weight, and in Gulf heat that is felt more on leather than on metal. The dial is busy by Journe standards but stays legible, because the indications are separated rather than stacked on each other.

Questions we are asked about this reference

Does a perpetual calendar ever need adjusting?

Not while it runs, since it accounts for month lengths and leap years on its own. 2100 is not a leap year and every perpetual of this type will need attention then. If this one stops, it can be reset from the crown at any hour, because the indications jump in unison and there is no danger window. The month is set with the corrector under the lug.

How long does it run off the wrist?

Journe states 160 hours plus or minus 10 for calibre 1300.3, roughly six and a half days. The five day figure often quoted for the Octa belongs to the original 1300 base. Worth confirming against the brand's spec sheet for this reference.

Is 42mm the only size the Octa was made in?

No, the Octa case was made in more than one diameter across the line. Read the size from the paperwork or have it measured rather than decoding it from a stock code, which does not reliably carry size, metal or dial.

The collection

Octa

One automatic base calibre, a whole family of complications

Octa is Journe's automatic platform, launched in 2001 around the calibre 1300. The same base carried a power reserve model, a moon phase, a second time zone, a chronograph and a calendar, most of them showing the large date, the complications sharing a case size rather than demanding a bigger watch. Journe no longer catalogues Octa as a collection. The descendants sit under Classique and lineSport, with the Octa prefix dropped from the names, worth knowing when you search.

Sizes in the family

38mm and 40mm early, 40mm to 44mm on later pieces

Who it suits

Suits a buyer who wants a complication they can wear every day rather than a display piece.
