A mysterious movement shows hands that appear to run on nothing, an illusion Cartier learned from the clockmaker Maurice Couët in 1912 and has kept as a house speciality ever since. Here a sculpted panther curls around the opening.

This Cartier Panthère Mystérieuse wears a 40mm 18k white gold case with a diamond set dial. Manual winding 9981 MC inside.

Fun fact: The hands are fixed to two sapphire discs with toothed edges, driven from the rim so nothing connects them to the centre. Cartier made mystery clocks for decades before it could shrink the principle into a wristwatch.

A bracelet that happens to tell the time, revived in 2017

Panthère first appeared in 1983 and Cartier brought it back in 2017 with the original idea intact: a watch that wears like a bracelet. The supple linked bracelet is the whole point, lying flat and moving with the wrist. The square case carries a screwed bezel, Roman numerals, a rail-track minute ring, blued steel sword hands and a cabochon-set crown, in steel, yellow, white or pink gold and two-tone, alongside diamond-set versions. Quartz, as the original was.
