Konstantin Chaykin's Joker is the most famous independent watch of its generation: the eyes are the hours and minutes, the grin is the moonphase, and no two owners ever photograph it straight-faced. Made in tiny numbers in Moscow by a bureau of one true inventor.

The Joker in 42mm stainless steel with the in-house Wristmons module on an automatic base. Full set.

The reference in depth

A dial that looks back at you

Why this one matters

Konstantin Chaykin showed the Joker in 2017, and it did something no complication chart accounts for: it made the dial a face. Two discs form the eyes, the left carrying the hours and the right the minutes, with the numerals appearing in each eye as the disc turns. The mouth is a moonphase, the crescent behaving like a tongue as the month runs.

Chaykin is a Russian independent and a member of the AHCI, working in small runs rather than in series production. The Joker was produced in small annual batches after 2017 and became the start of the Wristmons family, which has since taken in a cast of other characters. Later versions have appeared in different case treatments and dial colours, so specification varies from example to example.

The movement

Automatic, with Chaykin's Wristmons module above a Swiss base rather than an in-house calibre. The base is usually reported as an ETA 2824-2, which is worth confirming against the specific execution rather than taken as given. Winding and setting behave conventionally, and a full wind gives roughly a day and a half to two days. The interest here is not the base architecture but the module, which does the work a dial would normally do.

On the wrist

A 42mm steel case with a face staring back is not a discreet watch, and it was never meant to be. It reads across a table instantly, which is much of why it works in a majlis or over dinner. Telling the time takes a beat for the first few days and then stops being an effort at all. The moonphase mouth is the detail people notice second.

Questions we are asked about this reference

Is the movement made in-house?

The base is a Swiss automatic, usually reported as an ETA 2824-2 and worth confirming for the execution on offer. The Wristmons module on top is Chaykin's own work, and that module is what the watch is about.

Can it be serviced in the Gulf?

Routine work on the base calibre is straightforward for a competent watchmaker. Anything involving the display module is best sent to the maker, so allow for shipping time.

How do you actually read it?

Left eye for hours, right eye for minutes, mouth for the moon. It feels odd for a day or two and then becomes as quick as a normal dial.

Wristmons

Faces for the wrist, where the dial looks back at you

Konstantin Chaykin founded his manufacture in 2003 and has produced in Moscow since 2012, working as an independent maker. Wristmons is his running family of watches whose dials read as actual faces. The Joker of 2017 set the pattern, with two discs as the eyes, the left for hours and the right for minutes, and a moon phase forming the mouth. Most characters arrive as limited series, while the core Joker stays in small batch serial production.
