Audemars Piguet added a 34mm Royal Oak with a mechanical movement in 2022, closing a gap where the small sizes had long been quartz. The two-tone execution revives a pairing the house used through the 1970s and largely set aside in the 2000s.

This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding wears a 34mm steel case with an 18k rose gold bezel and a grey tapisserie dial. Calibre 5800 inside, on a steel bracelet with rose gold centre links.

Fun fact: SR is the house code for the steel and pink gold pairing, alongside ST for steel and OR for pink gold. It appears twice in the reference, once for the case and once in the bracelet block.

The 1972 steel sports watch that set the template for the integrated bracelet

The Royal Oak arrived in 1972, widely credited as the first luxury sports watch in steel, drawn by Gérald Genta around an octagonal bezel held down by eight visible screws. Everything else follows from that: the bracelet integrated into the case and tapering to the clasp, the Tapisserie dial on most references, the hand-finished play of brushed tops against polished bevels. The line now runs from simple time and date up to perpetual calendars and open-worked pieces.
