Frosted Gold has been a standing part of the Royal Oak catalogue since 2016, hammered across the case and bracelet rather than applied as a coating. The 34mm case arrived in 2020 with a movement built for it, and the 2024 additions were the first to pair the frosted case with a textured dial instead of tapisserie.

This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Frosted Gold wears a 34mm 18k yellow gold case, hammered across case and bracelet, with a gold-toned Crystal Sand dial. Calibre 5800 inside.

Fun fact: the Crystal Sand dial pattern is modelled on the shape of a real ruthenium crystal, and the stamping die was grown by electroforming, deposited atom by atom, before the dial goes into a galvanic bath.

The 1972 steel sports watch that set the template for the integrated bracelet

The Royal Oak arrived in 1972, widely credited as the first luxury sports watch in steel, drawn by Gérald Genta around an octagonal bezel held down by eight visible screws. Everything else follows from that: the bracelet integrated into the case and tapering to the clasp, the Tapisserie dial on most references, the hand-finished play of brushed tops against polished bevels. The line now runs from simple time and date up to perpetual calendars and open-worked pieces.
