The Annual Calendar is a Patek invention of 1996, a full calendar needing one correction a year, patented and never bettered. It made complicated watchmaking wearable every day.

Patek Philippe's Annual Calendar presented in 36mm 18k white gold with an annual calendar, finished with a white display. The 315/189 movement drives it.

Fun fact: Patek patented the annual calendar in 1996: it tracks every month except February, so you set it once a year and leave it. It was the first genuinely new calendar complication in fifty years.

The reference in depth

Patek and Tiffany, 150 years marked

Why this one matters

Tiffany and Co. began retailing Patek Philippe in 1851, and the double signed dials collectors chase today come out of that arrangement. In 2001 the two houses marked 150 years of it with a limited annual calendar, 150 pieces in each of three golds, which is where the T150 nickname comes from.

The complication inside was Patek's own recent work. The annual calendar was patented in 1996 and launched in ref 5035: day, date and month that hold good through every long and short month, and ask for a hand only at the end of February. The 5150 puts that mechanism into a dressier case with a hinged officer's back and the Tiffany and Co. signature on the dial.

The movement

Self winding, with the annual calendar and moon phase built onto Patek's slim automatic base. Caliber 315/189, with the Geneva Seal on the bridges and a reserve specified at 38 to 48 hours. The calendar works through gearing rather than the cams and levers of a traditional calendar, which is why it steps over the 30 day months on its own and takes correction without protest. Read the caliber on the movement itself and confirm it is 315/189.

On the wrist

36mm. Small by current taste, and it wears its size honestly. White gold keeps it discreet, so most people read it as a plain dress watch until the calendar registers. The hinged back opens onto the movement, which is the part every buyer looks at twice.

Questions we are asked about this reference

What does T150 mean?

It marks 150 years of the Patek Philippe and Tiffany and Co. relationship, counted from 1851, and it appears on the anniversary packaging. The run happens to be 150 pieces per metal.

Annual calendar or perpetual?

Annual. It knows the 30 and 31 day months but not February, so it needs one correction a year at the start of March. Simpler than a perpetual, with fewer parts in the calendar work.

Does the Tiffany signature really add value?

Usually, when the signature is verified. How much depends on the reference and the dial, which is why it should be checked against the archive rather than taken on sight.

Annual Calendar

The calendar Patek patented in 1996, set once a year at the end of February

Patek Philippe patented the annual calendar in 1996 and introduced it in the reference 5035, a self-winding watch that reads the long and short months by itself and needs one correction a year, at the end of February. It sits between a simple date and a perpetual calendar, since it knows which months run to 30 and 31 days but not February. The tell is three apertures for day, date and month set along the arc of a circle below 12, with a moon phase and 24 hour indication at 6 on many references. Patek files the family under Complications, and it runs from plain round gold references through the regulator, travel time and flyback chronograph versions to diamond set ladies models.

Sizes in the family

38 to 42 mm on current references, earlier pieces smaller

Who it suits

For the buyer who wants a calendar on the dial but is content to set it once a year, at the end of February.
