The reference in depth
Vacheron has built the Patrimony around one idea: a thin round case, a slightly domed dial, and as little else as possible. The bi-retrograde day-date is the exception the family allows itself. Two hands sweep arcs, the date across the top of the dial and the day across the bottom, then snap back at the end of their run. Vacheron put that layout into a 42.5mm Patrimony in 2006, with reference 86020, and the 4000U series carries it now.
The complication is unusual in this segment. Retrograde displays are more often paired with heavy dial architecture; here they sit on a plain silvered dial with applied gold markers, in a case of 9.7mm, slim for a watch with two retrograde displays. It reads as simple across a room and shows its mechanism only when the hands reset.
Calibre 2460 R31R7 family, self-winding, beating at 4Hz with roughly 40 hours of reserve and a 22k gold rotor visible through the back. Both retrograde works are built on that base. The watch carries the Hallmark of Geneva, so finishing is held to a standard checked on the assembled watch, not only on loose parts. The exact suffix engraved on the calibre should be read off the movement or the papers.
42.5mm sounds large for a dress watch and wears smaller than the number suggests. At 9.7mm thick, with short lugs that turn down early, it sits flat under a cuff, and it works on wrists from about 16cm up. Pink gold sits close to the wrist. The dial is busier than a plain Patrimony, so it reads better as a daytime watch than a black tie one.
Does 42.5mm wear big?
Less than the number suggests. The case is 9.7mm thick and the lugs turn down early, so it reads as a wide dial rather than a large watch. It works on wrists from about 16cm up.
Are retrograde displays a service risk?
Not in normal use. There are more parts than a plain date, so a service costs more and should go to Vacheron or a watchmaker who knows the calibre. Used sensibly, and kept off the correctors during the change window, the mechanism is not delicate.
How does it compare with a plain Patrimony?
The plain Patrimony is the purer design and the thinner watch. This one trades some of that for a dial you can watch work. Which of those matters more is usually the whole decision.

Patrimony launched in 2004, drawn from the slim Vacheron Constantin dress watches of the 1950s, references 6179 and 6187 among them, which ran the ultra thin 1001 and 1003 calibres. Nearly everything is stripped out: a round case with a thin bezel, a domed dial, slim applied gold markers curved to follow the dome, and a pearl minute track around the edge. The line covers hand wound and self winding models and extends through retrograde day and date and moon phase pieces to perpetual calendars. Cases are gold or platinum.
