The Royal Oak invented the luxury steel sports watch in 1972: Gerald Genta’s octagonal bezel, eight hexagonal screws and the Tapisserie dial that saved Audemars Piguet. Every integrated bracelet watch since exists in its shadow.
Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak 42, here in 42mm steel, carrying a silver, applied markers display. 2120 / 2808 keeps it running.
Fun fact: Every Royal Oak dial is cut on a rose engine one pass at a time before it is plated, and the eight hexagonal screws in the bezel are aligned by hand at the end of assembly. Both are why the model still costs what it does.
