The Royal Oak invented the luxury steel sports watch in 1972: Gerald Genta’s octagonal bezel, eight hexagonal screws and the Tapisserie dial that saved Audemars Piguet. Every integrated bracelet watch since exists in its shadow.

This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 37 wears a 37mm 18k white gold case with a purple, applied markers face. 3120 keeps it running.

Fun fact: Jacqueline Dimier scaled the Royal Oak for smaller wrists in 1976, only four years after the original, and it was the first luxury sports watch made for women rather than shrunk for them.

The 1972 steel sports watch that set the template for the integrated bracelet

The Royal Oak arrived in 1972, widely credited as the first luxury sports watch in steel, drawn by Gérald Genta around an octagonal bezel held down by eight visible screws. Everything else follows from that: the bracelet integrated into the case and tapering to the clasp, the Tapisserie dial on most references, the hand-finished play of brushed tops against polished bevels. The line now runs from simple time and date up to perpetual calendars and open-worked pieces.
