The Daytona exists because Rolex's original 1960s chronograph could not sell itself on its own merits and needed Paul Newman's face and a lucky flip market to become the grail it is today. The gem-set white gold versions are a newer branch of that story, aimed less at racing drivers than at people who want the silhouette without ever touching a tachymetric bezel, and Rolex has been unusually willing to let diamonds replace that scale entirely.

This Rolex Cosmograph Daytona wears a 40mm white gold case with a white mother-of-pearl dial and a diamond-set bezel. Calibre 4131 inside, on an Oysterflex bracelet.

Fun fact: this reference was one of seven diamond-set Daytona variants Rolex introduced in a single wave at Watches and Wonders 2024, running the updated Calibre 4131, the first real architecture change to the Daytona's chronograph movement since the in-house 4130 debuted in 2000.

Rolex's chronograph, named for Daytona Beach and read against a tachymetric scale

Rolex introduced the Cosmograph in 1963 and named it for Daytona Beach in Florida, laying it out as a driver's instrument with three counters and a tachymetric scale on the bezel for reading average speed over a measured distance. Screw down pushers arrived on reference 6240 in 1965, sealing the chronograph into the Oyster case. The movement went from hand wound to an automatic based on the Zenith El Primero in 1988, to Rolex's own calibre 4130 in 2000 and the calibre 4131 in 2023. The case grew from 37 mm on the first series to 40 mm with that 1988 generation and has stayed there since, in steel, gold and platinum.
