The Datejust has been the reference point for the classic wristwatch since 1945, when it became the first to change its date automatically at midnight. Seventy years on it remains the one watch that fits every room.

Rolex's Datejust 41 (Black Jubilee), reference 126333G, in 41mm two-tone. Unworn with production year 2026, shown in the exact reference and dial configuration on offer.

Fun fact: Rolex grows its own gold in an in house foundry, one of the few watchmakers that alloys its metals from scratch.

The reference in depth

Why this one matters

The Datejust II of 2009 took the Datejust to 41mm with a thick case and wide lugs, and it divided opinion. It was never the easy sell the 36mm Datejust was. Rolex replaced it in 2016 with the Datejust 41, which kept the diameter but slimmed the case, reshaped the lugs and bezel, gave the bracelet a proper taper and brought in calibre 3235. In yellow Rolesor with a fluted bezel the reference is 126333.

Rolesor is Rolex's own word for steel and gold in one case, in use since the 1930s, and the Datejust is where the combination has been used longest and reads most naturally. Jubilee and Oyster bracelets are both offered, the Jubilee having been made for the Datejust in 1945. The G, as dealers write it, denotes diamond set hour markers, and it is dealer shorthand rather than part of any Rolex reference.

The movement

Calibre 3235 replaced the 3136 used in the Datejust II. It runs around 70 hours, with the Chronergy escapement, a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers, and Rolex rates it to within 2 seconds a day after casing. The date changes instantly at midnight. In practice the reserve means the watch can sit off the wrist over a weekend and still be running on Monday morning.

On the wrist

The case is 41mm but it is not thick at under 12mm, and the slimmer lug and bezel profile keep it from wearing as heavy as the Datejust II did. On Jubilee it is the softer of the two bracelets and moves with the arm. Gold centre links pick up heat quickly outdoors here, which is worth knowing before committing to two tone. The black dial holds contrast well against the gold.

Questions we are asked about this reference

Is this the same watch as the Datejust II?

No. Same 41mm diameter, different case. The Datejust 41 is thinner, with reshaped lugs and bezel, a bracelet that tapers properly and calibre 3235 in place of the 3136.

Do diamond markers complicate servicing?

On factory diamond dials the stones are set at Rolex and the watch is serviced normally. Aftermarket-set stones are a different matter, as Rolex will not service a watch with non-factory gem setting, so confirm the dial is factory before buying. Ask for the settings to be checked while the watch is open, since stones can loosen over decades of wear.

Jubilee or Oyster on a Datejust 41?

The Jubilee is softer and dressier and is what most people associate with the model. The Oyster is flatter and more robust. Both are correct for the reference, so it comes down to how you wear it.

The collection

Datejust

The first self winding chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial

Rolex launched the Datejust in 1945, the company's fortieth year, as the first self winding chronometer wristwatch to indicate the date in a window on the dial. The Jubilee bracelet was made for that watch and named for the anniversary, and it carries the same name today. The Cyclops lens over the date and the fluted bezel are the other two tells, though smooth and gem set bezels and the Oyster bracelet sit alongside them. The line now runs from the Lady-Datejust at 28 mm through 31, 36 and 41 mm, in steel, in gold and in the two combined, across a wide spread of dials.
